  1. B u s h l a n d & t h i c k e t
  2. G r a s s l a n d
  3. B u s h e d & w o o d e d g r a s s l a n d .

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

.

Themeda triandra    Sporobolus pyramidalis
Fig. 2.8 Themeda triandra.(Edwards and Bogdan)    Fig 2.9 Sporobolus pyramidalis (Edwards and Bogdan)

Loudetia kagerensis    Cynodon dactylon
Fig. 2.11 Loudetia kagerensis. (Edwards and Bogdan)   Fig. 2.12 Cynodon dactylon. (Flora of Sudan)

Panicum maximum    Hyparrhenia filipendula
Fig. 2.6 Panicum maximum. (Edwards and Bogdan)    Fig. 2.7 Hyparrhenia filipendula (Edward and Bogdan)

Brachystegia spiciformes    Terminalia mollis
Fig. 2.13 Brachystegia spiciformes (Flora of Rhodesia)    Fig. 2.3 Fruits of Terminalia mollis. (Flora of Rhodesia)

Regenval is zeer onbetrouwbaar (500-750 mm). De meest voorkomende Acaciasoorten zijn: A.tortilis subsp. spirocarpa, A.seyal, A.nilotica, A.gerrardii, A.nigrescens en A.senegal.

H.23 TANZANIA

Hyparrhenia dissolute - H. filipendula - Andropogon schirensis -Pennisetum polystachyon - Eragrostis chapelieri - E. patens - Setaria sphacelata - Chloris gayana

These are chiefly tall grasses with a varying cover density, usually associated with a woodland of Brachystegia spp., or a more open woodland savanna type of vegetation dominated by Combretum spp. or Acacia spp. (A. tortilis subs. spirocarpa, A. nigrescens and A. clavigera subsp. usambarensis are common species). The soils are generally poor and sandy and derived from granite. This type occurs at altitudes ranging from 1.500 to 5,000 feet (450 to 1,500 metres) with a rainfall between 30 and 40 inches (760 to 1,020 millimetres) distributed during the period November to May.

Most of the grasses are palatable when young, but if not closely grazed or controlled by cutting they soon run to stalk and fibre, particularly the species of Hyparrhenia and Andropogon which grow to 7 feet (2 metres) in height. The carrying capacity is potentially good but much depends on management. The land is suitable for mixed farming with tobacco, rice and cassava. A large number of other crops, such as maize, sorghum, millet and groundnuts are also grown, but on account of the low soil fertility before the land is improved, yields generally are low. Livestock could play an important role in farming these areas. This type is characteristic of extensive areas of western Tanzania and parts of the eastern and southern regions; under natural conditions it has a carrying capacity of about 20 acres per beast but with better management and a certain amount of environmental improvement, this can be increased considerably.

H.24 TANZANIA

Hyparrhenia rufa - Bothriochloa glabra - Setaria sphacelata - S. holstii - Sporobolus robustus - S. marginatus - Ischaemum afrum - Chloris gayana - Hyparrhenia filipendula

In the more permanently wet areas, species such as Echinochloa pyramidalis, Leersia hexandra, Phragmites communis and Imperata cylindrica are common. This is an edaphic grassland which is maintained by periodic flooding and frequent burning. The soils are variable but fertile. The type occurs at altitudes from sea level to over 4,000 feet (1,220 metres) with a rainfall of 30 to 45 inches (760 to 1,140 millimetres) distributed between November and June. Much of the region is suitable for mixed farming with maize, sorghum, millet, cassava, cotton and sisal.

The type is typical of much of the coastal belt, having a carrying capacity of about 12 acres per beast under natural conditions, but with better management and a certain amount of environmental improvement such as clearing, this can be increased considerably.

H.25 KENYA

Hyparrhenia filipendula - H. dissolute - Loudetia kagerensis - Setaria trinervia - Themeda triandra - Cymbopogon afronardus

(Hyparrhenia pilgeriana and H. rufa are common on areas with impeded drainage and Imperata cylindrica on old cultivations.)

These are grasses of medium height (3 to 5 feet or 1 to 1.5 metres) generally associated with a tree savanna type of vegetation which varies from moderately dense to very open and is mostly dominated by Combretum sp. Bush clearing and or tire have brought about the open condition. The altitude varies from lake level at 3,750 feet (1,100 metres) to 66.500 feet (2,000 metres) and the rainfall from about 40 to 50 ins.

Hyparrhenia is usually 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 metres) in height and is palatable early in the growing season, while the shorter grasses are palatable for a longer period. In seasonally waterlogged places, scattered throughout the area (about 10 percent of the land), the dominant species is Hyparrhenia pilgeriana, a grass of medium to good grazing value. On swampy ground at lower altitudes (Lake Victoria area), Hyparrhenia rufa is a dominant grass. The grazing capacity is estimated at 2 to 5 acres (0.8 to 2 hectares) per head per year, except in the areas of Cymbopogon afronardus, where it may be lower. Agriculturally this is a mixed farming area with maize as the main crop. Rhodes grass and molasses grass are cultivated in leys.

T.11 TANZANIA

Themeda triandra - Digitaria maitlandii - Andropogon schirensis - Setaria sphacelata

This grassland has been derived from forest, with forest relicts in fireprotected localities occurring above 4,000 feet (1,200 metres) and with an annual rainfall above 30 inches (760 millimetres). It is similar to type T.10, but contains more palatable species.

T.12 TANZANIA

Themeda triandra - Bothriochloa insculpta - Heteropogon contortus - Hyparrhenia - Harpachne schimperi - Cynodon plectostachyus - C. dactylon - Pennisetum mezianum

These grasses are associated with a very open, often almost treeless savanna with scattered Acacia drepanolobium or other tree species occurring on red and black soils and some flood plain areas. The type occurs at altitudes of 1,500 to 4,000 feet (450 to 1,200 metres) with a rainfall of 25 to 35 inches (640 to 900 millimetres) distributed over about five months between December and May. The quality of the grazing is good under proper management. Arable crops include maize, sorghum, millet, cowpeas, pigeon peas, cassava and sisal. The carrying capacity of the grassland under natural conditions of about 15 acres (6 hectares) per beast may be increased with proper management.

On a considerable area around the southeast side of Lake Victoria which has been intensively cultivated for many years, a sparse grass cover now exists, with Bothriochloa probably more common than Themeda. Van Rensburg describes it as "cultivation steppe".

T.13 KENYA

Themeda triandra - Eragrostis superba - Cenchrus ciliaris - Cymbopogon pospischilii - Bothriochloa insculpta - Heteropogon contortus

(Cynodon plectostachyus and C. dactylon cover extensive areas on old lake sites, and on the black clay plains Pennisetum mezianum, P. stramineum, Setaria phleoides and Digitaria sp. are very common.)

This is a very open savanna, being almost treeless in some areas or with a denser scattering of Acacia drepanolobium in others, occurring at an altitude between 3,500 and 6,500 feet (1,100 to 2,000 metres) and with a rainfall generally of the order of 25 to 35 inches (640 to 901) millimetres). The carrying capacity of the grass cover in the Acacia/Themeda zone varies considerably, but is mostly between 4 and 15 acres (1.5 and 6 hectares) per head per year. Agriculturally, this is predominantly ranching country with some marginal cultivation of maize and sisal. In the African areas, maize, sorghum, cassava, pigeon peas and pulses are cultivated more intensively.

Chloris type

C.1 KENYA, TANZANIA, UGANDA, SOMALIA

Chloris roxburghiana - Latipes senegalensis - Digitaria sp. - Enteropogon macrostachyus - Tetrapogon sp. - Cenchrus ciliaris in parts - Chrysopogon aucheri - Aristida adscensionis

(Sporobolus helvolus, a grass of high grazing value. predominates on heavy black soils with impeded drainage.)

These grasses are associated with tree or bush steppe in which Commiphora, Acacia and Adansonia are the chief tree species. It is found at altitudes of 1,500 to 4.000 feet (450 to 1,200 metres) with a rainfall of 15 to 25 inches (380 to 640 millimetres). Dense bush, which covers quite extensive areas, reduces the grazing capacity quite considerably. On the other hand, browse trees and shrubs contribute to a large extent to stock feeding in the dry seasons. There is considerable denudation of the grass cover due to overgrazing or uncontrolled grazing, particularly in the northern portion of the area, where there is no tsetse fly. The carrying capacity varies from 6 to 30 acres (2.5 to 12 hectares) per head per year (up to 50 acres or 20 hectares in dense bush). Agriculturally this is a ranching country with some African agriculture (maize, sorghum, pigeon pea). In TANZANIA, lack of water and the presence of tsetse fly prevent this country from being utilized to the best advantage at present. Although it has a low carrying capacity, it is felt that with suitable management and a certain amount of environmental improvement such as bush clearing, this could be considerably increased.

Pennisetum types

P.1 TANZANIA

Pennisetum clandestinum - P. schimperi Themeda triandra - Eratheca abyssinica - Pennisetum catabasis - Panicum trichocladum -Andropogon pratensis - Digitaria scalarum - Aristida adoensis - Eleusine jaegeri

In some areas Pennisetum catabasis grows in soils which might hold up water but this is not generally where it occurs most frequently, as it does in Kenya (Type P.2). This type is an open grassland with grasses 18 to 36 inches (45 to 90 centimetres) high, or sometimes short and dense, often with Kenya white clover associated. The dominance of certain species depends on fire, soil fertility and grazing intensity. Although this grassland has been classified as a Pennisetum type, in Kenya it is considered by Trapnell to have been originally a Themeda type, derived in the first place from evergreen forest. The Pennisetum species have taken over from the Themeda as a result of heavy grazing pressure and other biotic influences. Digitaria scalarum encroaches severely on cultivated lands.

This type occurs at altitudes of 5,000 to 8,000 feet (1,500 to 2,400 metres) with a rainfall of 30 to 60 inches (750 to 1,500 millimetres) distributed over two rainy seasons approximately between August and December and between March and June. (It is similar in many respects to type P.2 in Kenya.)

The grazing quality of the North Mara Highland Grasslands has deteriorated greatly due to uncontrolled grazing and burning, and coarse, wiry tufted grasses such as Pennisetum catabasis, Aristida adoensis and Sporobolus indicus have become dominant over wide areas. A system of alternate husbandry and mixed farming would appear to be of value in developing move palatable grazing, as Pennisetum catabasis does not re-invade cultivated land, and Rhodes grass could be sown as a ley pasture to prevent Digitaria scalarum from encroaching. Even a three-year fallow has brought back an excellent cover of palatable indigenous species.

Under natural conditions this type has a carrying capacity of about 12 acres per beast but this can be considerably increased by controlled management and environmental improvement such as clearing.

P.2 KENYA

Pennisetum clandestinum - P. schimperi - Themeda triandra - Panicum trichocladum - Andropogon pratensis - Digitaria scalarum - Eleusine jaegeri

(Exotheca abyssinica and Pennisetum catabasis occur on areas with impeded drainage.)

This is an open grassland with grasses 18 to 36 inches (45 to 90 centimetres) high, or sometimes short and dense, often with Kenya white clover associated. The dominance of certain species depends on fire, soil fertility and grazing intensity. Although this grassland has been classified as a Pennisetum type, it is considered by Trapnell to have been originally a Themeda type, derived in the first place from an evergreen forest. The Pennisetum species have taken over from the Themeda as a result of heavy grazing pressure and other biotic influences. This type is found at altitudes ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 feet (1,500 to 3,000 metres) with a rainfall of 30 to 90 inches (760 to 2,300 millimetres).

Pennisetum schimperi is a coarse grass of low palatability, undesirable in pastures, and fire can, if hot enough, suppress it in favour of the much superior Themeda. In places of high fertility, Kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) can be dominant. This occurs either on land recently cleared from forest, or in heavily manured herding places. In the areas of lower rainfall the forest does not regenerate easily and the grassland is usually treeless. Swampy types of grassland occupy considerable areas on flat land near Eldoret (Uasin Gishu Plateau) and at the Kinangop.

Agriculturally this is a. mixed-farming area with cereals, pyrethrum, potatoes and similar crops. European grasses such as cocksfoot and the ryegrasses are cultivated in leys. The grazing capacity of the natural grassland varies considerably, and is usually 4 to acres (1.6 to 3.2 hectares) per head per year.
